In this episode, you will hear from Capri, a high school student pursuing an associate’s degree and Alex, a police officer pursuing a degree with tuition being paid for by his employer, the city of Elyria. 

Additionally, LCCC staff member Sarah Hudson shares the challenges that students face while in school and tips for completing a degree without debt such as talking to an advisor and making sure your have a clear career goal.

Highlights:

Starting early is key to achieving a debt-free degree. High school is an ideal time to begin planning for college. Taking the right classes and getting good grades can open up opportunities for scholarships and grants. It is also important to explore career options and to understand the labor market. This will help the student make an informed decision about what college to attend and what degree to pursue. 

Employers can also be a great resource for tuition assistance. Many companies have programs that provide tuition assistance for employees. It is also important to research and apply for grants. Grants are a great way to pay for college without taking on debt. Applying for the FAFSA is key: https://studentaid.gov/

Finally, it is important to ask for help when needed. College can be confusing and overwhelming. It is important to reach out to professors and advisors for guidance. They are there to help and can provide advice and assistance. It is also important to understand the terminology associated with college and to not be embarrassed to ask questions. 

Completing a degree without going into debt is possible with the right planning and preparation.
